Back to the studio

It was good to get back to my space to do some painting rather than tidying. After time away it always takes a while to get back into the swing of things… a bit of sitting about looking at books, looking at work, looking at my walls (which have lots of images pinned up), a bit of writing sometimes….

I had a piece of commissioned work to finish; this is always good for focussing the mind, particularly when there’ a deadline. There are also few things of my own I want to push on with. Even after all these years my own work feels like some sort of self indulgence, to the point where I can talk myself out of doing it.

I’ve had several false starts with plans for a self portrait. I was trying to do something technically a bit tricky, and then the canvas started fighting back too. So I spent some time priming canvases and began again. I was having difficulty contorting myself into a pose which fitted onto the canvas alongside lots of images that I wanted to surround the portrait. In the original pose I was sitting with my arm leaning on a pile of books, which made leaning over to the palette extremely difficult, and ultimately I decided I didn’t like the results being produced. I abandoned that idea to begin another, which took me a while again getting the pose to look alright. This time the position of the legs causing me some problems.

Due to some indecision about where to place my feet, I started yet another canvas, and this may be the one that I progress with.

So I’m just off to do that.
